Cubism Project

Article's Review:
I think that it is fascinating that a couple of artists would take the leap outside of the norm of the art world to try and compose art that was not as detailed as the other forms. They emphasized the two-dimensional nature of the canvas rather than trying to capture every three-dimensional details. Deciding to look at the scene in shape sand geometric forms helped give the picture more shape in a way that the normal type of art at the time could not. I also think it is wonderful that this style of artless the viewer experience the image or photo in multiple ways. I never realized that Picasso painted so that it felt as we were walking around the subject. Storytelling is a big part of art, so this style works together to give depth and meaning to the photo more than just a plain image.

End Questions:
1) I decided to use this photo because I thought it would be interesting to try and piece together the buildings in the background and the lamps lining the photo.
2) I had already taken this photo on San Francisco, so instead I cropped different sections of the image into smaller pieces and pieced them together in more abstract and differently sized ways to create the bigger picture.
3) It was very time consuming and it was difficult to get each piece to fit together in a way that at least revealed some kind of shape that made sense to the viewer.
4) If I did this project a second time, I think I would try and use a photo with a person in it and capture the different aspects of them as a subject.
What I learned:
This assignment helped me explore this particular style of art in much more depth than I have before. Looking at Picasso's paintings you can tell that his style is very unique and composed of basic geometric shapes. It is almost as if he is looking at the subject through a lens that simplifies the details of what he is seeing. More than this, I learned how artists developed this style of art into a popular form that other artists came to admire. It helped to read the article so I could see how to recreate my own photo using blocky shapes.
What I did:
I began by looking through my previously taken photos to find one that I thought had a combination of interesting shapes and layers. I chose the photo of a line of lamps in downtown San Francisco because of the interesting line of the lamps combined with the different layers of buildings in the background. I combined different sections of the photo together sort of like a puzzle to create the overall image, which was much more blockier. This assignment was very tedious and time-consuming because it requires the person to line up each line close enough so that it will make sense to the viewer, but I was proud of my end result.
